support@dearthoughts.comCommon questions
Quick answers before you reach out — chances are someone has asked before.
+ Is my journal really private?
Yes. Entries are encrypted on your device before they ever leave it, sealed with a passphrase only you hold. We can’t read them, and neither can anyone else.
+ What happens if I forget my passphrase?
When you set up encryption, the app shows you a one-time recovery key and asks you to keep it somewhere safe. With it, you can unlock your journal and choose a new passphrase — nothing is lost. You can also change your passphrase anytime; your recovery key stays valid. But we have to be honest: without the recovery key, a forgotten passphrase means your entries stay sealed. We never see your passphrase or your key, so we truly cannot open them for you — that isn’t a limitation, it’s the promise.
+ Can I use my journal on a new phone?
Yes. Sign in on the new device and enter your passphrase — your entries arrive encrypted and unlock right there on the phone. The key that travels through our servers is itself sealed, useless without the passphrase that never leaves your hands.
+ Does Dear Thoughts use my writing to train AI?
Never. Your entries are not used to train any model, ours or anyone else’s. AI requests are processed in the moment and not retained — and you can switch AI assistance off entirely in your profile.
+ Can I use the journal without the AI?
Yes. Profile → AI assist — one switch. When it’s off, nothing you write is sent to an AI provider; suggestions stay silent and reflections are woven quietly on your phone instead.
+ Can I turn off analytics?
Yes. Profile → Usage analytics — one switch. When it’s off, no usage events leave your phone. Anonymous crash reports still help us fix bugs, and they’re scrubbed before sending: never any journal content, never anything that identifies you.
+ What languages does the app support?
English, Romanian, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian — for both the interface and the AI reflections.
+ Is the Foundation check-in a medical tool?
No. It’s a wellness companion that maps nervous-system signals using gentle vocabulary. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace professional care.
+ How much does it cost?
Free at launch. We will tell you clearly, in advance, if that ever changes.
+ Can I export my entries?
Yes — bind your whole journal into a typeset keepsake PDF book, with a cover, chapters by month, and your photos woven in. Your journal is always yours to take with you.
+ What happens if I miss a day?
Nothing harsh. Your streak is a slowly growing garden, and every five entries banks a rest day (you can hold up to three) — a missed day is quietly covered by one instead of resetting you to zero.
+ Do the AI features need an internet connection?
The richest reflections use a private, on-demand request, but the core works offline — and the weekly letter falls back to a warm local summary when you’re not connected.
A note on care
Dear Thoughts is a wellness companion, not a substitute for therapy or medical care. If you are in crisis or need urgent help, please reach out to local emergency services or a crisis hotline in your country.
If your writing ever suggests you are struggling, the app quietly offers support resources in your own language — all eight it speaks. That noticing happens entirely on your device; nothing you write is sent anywhere for it.
